Description

This group of figures of women and children in a parkland setting is one of fourteen works by Monticelli in the Burrell Collection. As Van Gogh recognised, 'Monticelli does not give us, or pretend to give us, literal colours or realism. He gives us something passionate and eternal - the rich colour and rich sun of the glorious South in a real colourist way.'Unlike Monticelli's many paintings of pastoral scenes, fêtes, or of religious subjects, this painting shows that he was, from time to time, inspired to work from nature rather than purely from his imagination. It is known that Monticelli used to cut the bristles of his paint brushes in half, to make them harder. This helps explains the rich, rough surface of his paintings which are made up of impasto - thickly-applied paint.
