Title Savacou Maquette
Collection African and Asian Visual Artists Archive
Artist Ronald Moody
Date 1963
Description The artist's original visualisation of the Carib deity 'Savacou' was based on god's heron incarnation. When this was rejected, he evolved this abstract parrot form, as that bird had long been common to the West Indies. Work made from the artists interest in Jamaica's pre - Colombian past. 'Savacou' was said to be the god who controlled thunder and strong winds, he became a bird and later a star.
