Lethaby worked in Shaw's offices as his Chief Clerk between 1879-1890; Shaw had expressed admiration for Lethaby's drawings before employing him. This particular piece was almost certainly made during Lethaby's first three years at Shaw's company.
Object Notes Full - "St. James's Branch Offices of the Alliance British and Foreign Life and Fire Assurance Company of Bartholomew Lane". Drawing by Lethaby of a building designed by Shaw, reproduced in the May 26th 1882 issue of The Building News (a double page spread). A very detailed 'sketch' view of the building with a plan of the first floor in the top left hand corner.
