Description Two horses are depicted held by a groom at the gateway of an old castle. Wouterus Verschuur was a Dutch painter of animal subjects mainly horses and of landscapes. He is one of the later representatives of Romanticism in Dutch art. Horses were a very popular subejct matter in the 19th century painting: for Romantic painters horses represented the idea of wildness and freedom, but on the other hand they were associated with soldiers and battles, which were also popular themes for Romantic painters. 19th century viewers appreciated depictions of historical times, including anything associated with the idea of old-time nobility, including medieval knights, old castles and the servants taking care of their horses.

Notes John Burton (1799-1882) was a horse dealer and farmer; he created a collection of paintings (mainly Victorian) in his villa in Poppleton, Yorkshire. He had been on the organising committees for the 1866 and 1879 exhibitions in York and decided to leave his collection to the citizens of York rather than his first choice, the National Gallery (he was persuaded to change his will a month prior to his death). The Burton Bequest of 127 pictures founded the York Gallery's permanent collection.
