Description Sheep and cattle graze on a grassy foreground ledge, with two shepherds sitting on the right. Rocky mountains rise in the middle distance. A very similar landscape was depicted by Loutherbourg in his painting Lodore Waterfall, near Keswick, also signed and dated 1784 (Government Art Collection). Philip James de Loutherbourg (Philippe-Jacques, or Philipp Jakob), sometimes refered to as the Younger, was born in Strasbourg. He settled in London in 1771 and became known for his landscape paintings, set designs for London theatres, and his invention of a mechanical theatre called the 'Eidophusikon'. This painting has been identified by Dr. R. Joppie as that exhibited by Loutherbourg at the Royal Academy in 1784 (no. 25), where it was sketched by E.F. Burney.
