Description A sunlit headland juts into the sea, viewed from higher ground. Port-de-Goulphar, a narrow inlet forming a natural harbour, is on the south side of Belle-Ile-en-Mer, off the coast of Brittany. Gustave Loiseau was a French Impressionist painter. During the early 1890s he worked at Pont-Aven with Gauguin, and from 1897 he begun travelling through northern France thanks to the contract he received from the art dealer Durand-Ruel. Belle-Īle-en-Mer, an island off the coast of Brittany, was a popular place for painters and writers when Loiseau arrived there in 1900. An important scene in Alexandre Dumas' novel The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later, the last part of the 'd'Artagnan Romances', was set there. There are other depictions of the Belle-Īle-en-Mer by Loiseau dating to the early 1900s.
