A noble couple is walking along a harbour promenade, which is decorated with a statue of Poseidon. The couple is accompanied by servants (a black pageboy and a man protecting them from the sun with an umbrella) and surrounded by other people, dressed in oriental style.
Johannes (or Johann) Lingelbach was born in Frankfurt, but in 1634 his family moved to Amsterdam. He is associated with the second generation of ‘Bambocciate', a group of genre painters working in Rome. Lingelbach travelled to Italy in the 1640s and returned to Amsterdam in 1653. He painted landscapes and genre scenes; there are other similar harbour scenes, including Poseidon/Neptune statues and similar figures, in his oeuvre. Lingelbach's art was highly appreciated during his lifetime and Mediterranean harbour scenes were also painted by Lingelbach's followers.
