Description A sailing boat is in a heavy, stormy sea, trailing a smaller dinghy with two men, with a heavy sky beyond. Eugène Louis Gabriel Isabey was a French painter, draughtsman and printmaker. Early in his career his paintings consisted mostly of watercolour landscapes. He travelled to Normandy and Britain painting land- and seascapes; his early works were influenced by Romantic painting (such as that of Eugene Delacroix). His later works were dynamic and expressive scenes of storms, catastrophes, etc.

Notes The dating 1850-55 was proposed by Robert L. Herbert (Yale University, letter of 20 December 1967) who wrote he would place the painting YORAG : 1117 earlieer than The Wreck in the Detroit Institute of Arts (dated 1854) by the same artist.
