Description A landscape shows a path running through the centre, with buildings on either side. Two large trees lean across the centre from left to right, shading the path. Meyndert Lubbertsz Hobbema was a Dutch 'Golden Age' landscape painter from Amsterdam, a pupil of Jacob van Ruisdael. Almost without exception Hobbema's subject matter was the wooded landscape of the eastern Netherlands. There are other landscapes by Hobbema containing very similar cottages as those seen here. Closest is Wooded Landscape‘ (‘The Haarlem Wood‘), signed and dated 1663 (Musée Royal des Beaux-Arts, Brussels), but see also Wooded Landscape‘ of about 1662-63 (National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh) and Village Street under Trees‘ of about 1665 (Staatliche Museen, Berlin). This it may be possible to narrow down the dating of the painting in York to about 1662-65.
