Artist Goyen, Jan van (Dutch painter and printmaker, 1596-1656)
Date 1632 (dated)
Signed yes
Description Peasants with their horses and carts are grouped round an inn with a tree in the front. People on foot, soldiers, riders, partly-covered horsedrawn carts have all assembled here. Jan van Goyen was an important Dutch landscapist known for his so-called 'tonal style'. It is possible that there was a pendant to this painting, also dated 1632, last seen at auction in London, Sotheby's 6th December 1995, lot 45 (Beck II, no. 447). Similar depictions of people on a wagon seen from behind are present in van Goyen paintings dated 1632 (e.g. Dune Landscape with Wagons halted by a Farm, English private collection, sold at Douwes Fine Art, Amsterdam at 2008, and Selling fish at the Beach of Scheveningen, Museum der bildenden Künste, Leipzig). There is also a drawing of a wagon with travellers at an inn by van Goyen (sold Christie's 14 Nov 1988, lot 89).

Ernest Edward Cook (1865-1955) was an English philanthropist and businessman, who collected paintings and decorative arts. The collection which was, on his death, left to the National Art Collections Fund was regarded as one of the most important ever bequeathed to the fund; nearly 100 museums and art galleries throughout England benefitted from it.
