The costume and apparent age of the sitter indicate a date of around 1610 - perhaps the portrait was commisioned to mark Lady Fairfax's wedding in 1607. Lady Francis Fairfax (1586-1615) was the daughter of Edmund Sheffield, Earl of Mulgrave (1565-1646). Frances and her sister Mary were used by her father to heal a rift in the Fairfax family: Frances married Sir Philip Fairfax of Steeton (1586-1613) and Mary married Ferdinando Fairfax of Denton at a double wedding in 1607. Frances was buried at Bolton Percy on 9th June, 1615.
