Painting Title Apotheosis of the Duke of Buckingham, after Rubens
Collection York Art Gallery
Artist Attributed to Etty, William (English painter, 1787-1849)
After Rubens, Peter Paul (Flemish painter and draftsman, 1577-1640)
Date Earliest about 1830
Date Latest about 1835
Description The Duke of Buckingham is depicted carried upwards by Minerva and Mercury to a marble temple, with the personifications of Virtue and probably Abundance, as well as Envy, and the three Graces. It is a copy of the preparatory sketch for a ceiling painting showing the Apotheosis of George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham painted by Peter Paul Rubens for the Duke's London home, York House, which was destroyed by fire in 1949. The painting was probably commissioned from Rubens when Buckingham first met him in Paris in about 1625, and completed at the same time as an equestrian portrait of the Duke that Rubens painted also for the Duke's house in 1627. The sketch for the Apotheosis was in the National Gallery in London (NG187) from 1843, but most likely it was copied by Etty (although the attribution is not certain) while Rubens' sketch was on display in the collection of David Wilkie, fellow artists and Royal Academician. At the same time another copy was completed by Delacroix.
