Description In a landscape setting, a butcher's stall stands on the left; soldiers with their horses are on the right amongst their tents. Bloemen is best known for landscapes with figures and animals, although he painted many other subjects. His style is characterised by bright areas of colour (as in the costumed figure) in a more sombre overall palette, with carefully grouped animals in open, Italianate landscapes with one or two Roman-style ruins.

Notes John Bowes Morrell (1873-1963) was a member of York City Council, and twice Lord Mayor; as a Chairman of Art Gallery Committee he played a major role in establishment of the Castle Museum. He campaigned for the foundation of the University of York. He gave his collection of various paintings, drawings and prints to the Art Gallery in York. The painting YORAG : 52 is a pair with YORAG : 53 (Soldiers resting in a Village) by the same artist.
