Title The Baptism of Christ
Collection Victoria and Albert Museum
Artist German School
Date Earliest about 1600
Date Latest about 1630
Description The natural patterns of the marble have been incorporated into the composition. The original attribution to the Spanish school was due to the picture's Spanish provenance, but the technique of painting on marble does not appear to have been widespread in Spain, whereas objects of this kind were produced in South Germany as well as in Italy. Stylistically also, it fits more happily in the context of German mannerism.
