Description The date of this picture is not known but was probably painted around 1899 when Renoir, who had arthritis, decided to settle in the South of France, near Cannes (he later moved to Cagnes near Nice). During the 1880s, Renoir's Impressionist style gives way to more classical subjects of nudes and bathers. He adopted a long, fluid brushstroke as can be seen in this rapidly painted oil sketch.

Acquisition Details Transferred from estate of James Archdale from the Office of Arts and Libraries under the terms of the National Heritage Act and according to the wishes of the Archdale family 1980.
