About the collection

The Mechanical Engineering Image Collection is formed from the archives and historic book collection of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). The images cover topics from railways to manufacturing, spanning the late 1800's to the late 1900's. From works of art of Liverpool & Manchester Railway to images of Napier engines: and from design drawings of locomotives by David Joy to construction photographs of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Great Eastern; the collection offers a wealth of visual and informative images.

The Institution's archive charts the history of the Institution and of mechanical engineering and is open to all. Railway engineering, manufacturing, power plant development and automobile development are particularly well represented through personal and company papers.

A number of educational resources exist; IMechE is developing a Virtual Archive allowing remote access to some of its key holdings. First World War resources are available via our Engineers at War: from Home Front to Battle Front site.

IMechE is one of the fastest growing professional engineering institutions. Headquartered in London, but with operations around the world, the Institution has over 110,000 members in more than 140 countries. With a 160-year heritage supporting us and Her Majesty the Queen as our patron, today's Institution is a forward-looking, campaigning organisation. By working with leading companies, universities and think tanks, we create and share knowledge to provide government, businesses and the public with fresh thinking and authoritative guidance on all aspects of mechanical engineering. We truly believe we can improve the world through engineering.
