Calligraphy or fine writing, is an excellent basis for training in any letter design discipline. Historically it established a rationale for letterform in type design and it can provide a starting point for designing letter shapes in almost any material ie. stone, glass, ceramic or digital media. In its own right calligraphy is used in the creation of a wide range of unique handmade artifacts that range from the great documents of state to intimate and personal gifts. It is as a unique and expressive gestural art that calligraphy is most prized.
