This learning module is based upon material held at the Crafts Study Centre at The Surrey Institute of Art and Design, Farnham, England. Its aim is to be of use to anyone interested in accessing the centre's archive which is particularly rich in the work of the first two generations of British calligraphers to emerge from the twentieth century revival of calligraphy using the roman alphabet.

We show you how these pioneers taught themselves and in the process revived an ancient craft for modern usage. Since most calligraphers today have to be self directing in their studies the methods these early pioneers followed remain useful. The module is designed to appeal to a wide range of students but particularly those working at Certificate, Dilpoma and BA level.
