Learning Index >> Pioneers and their practice: a reference guide

Introduction
              Next >>

This reference guide reproduces over 200 examples of works by 30 key figures in the collection. The material is categorised under calligraphy, ceramics, printed and woven textiles, wood and furniture; the craft practitioners are arranged alphabetically under these headings, except where they are classed as 'followers' or 'pupils' when they appear under the name of their teacher. Images of work are arranged in date order and captioned with essential information; further details, dimensions and history can also be accessed on the Crafts Study Centre database, using the object acquisition number.

Accompanying each set of images is a biographical description of each practitioner's working life, setting out education, workshops, teaching assignments, major commissions and publications. Further reading can be found in the general bibliography and the books and catalogues listed, if out of print or unobtainable elsewhere, can be consulted at the Crafts Study Centre, by prior arrangement.
