No 48: Bird form, 1958-9 (P.84.30)

This gentle bird, dating from Rosemary Wren's early career, marks an interest in modelling she has followed all her life. The form is in saltglazed stoneware the surface of which is enlivened by spots or bursts of iron oxide, coming from within the clay body; the neck and wings of the bird are marked with incised lines and the eyes are deeply pierced. The addition of these drawn marks adds life to the pared-down form.
