No 45: Vase, 1960 (P.74.113)

During the 1960s Lucie Rie made a series of very rugged pots which are in marked contrast to her fine sgraffito porcelains. This bulbous fluted vase one of two distinct types, the other being 'knitted' (or cross-hatched and inlaid) bowls. It is thrown in coarse stoneware clay and squeezed when wet to form an oval at the rim; the widest part of the body is cut with a wide band of deep diagonal grooves and the pot is covered with a flecked grey-white glaze.
