No 41: Plate, 1935 (P.75.66)

Made in the mid-1930s at the St Ives Pottery, this circular plate combines several types of very lightly textured decoration. The plate is thrown in porcelain; a finely incised Japanese cherry tree occupies the centre of the form, lightly covered with a semi-transparent blue-grey glaze onto which pink blossoms are brushed to complete the tree. The rim is treated differently: on the upper face a thicker coating of the same glaze is cut through with large-scale cross-hatching and on the rim's reverse three mountains are incised.
