Learning Index >> Ceramic Decoration: a selective guide to pots in the collection of the Crafts Study Centre
This rare example of Bernard Leach's ceramic work from Japan was made at his Abiko Kinen workshop and came from his first kiln firing there. It is a unomi or traditional tea mug, thrown in white stoneware and incised with a view of Leach's workshop, kiln and the Teganuma Lagoon. The surface is completely uncoloured, relying purely on the spare, linear decoration drawn in the clay. It is signed '1919 ABIKO KINEN BL'.
