No 36: Figure group, 'Bridging the generation gap' (Opus 2), 1976 (P.77.12)

The second figure group, part of the same series as 'The glass of fashion' (No.35), is also a humorous social comment on fashionable dress and ageing. Instead of porcelain, the artist used a 'soft' stoneware clay, coloured with stains and oxides, mixed to an agateware effect in parts, and fired to 1140 degrees centigrade, in oxidation. The rolled and modelled clay is handled in an expressive way, especially in textures of the crimped hair and the rough-coated dogs. Both works in this selection were made at Audrey Blackman's workshop in Boar's Hill, Oxford.
