No 33: Jar, c.1995 (P.95.2)
This fat-bellied jar, or garden jar, is reminiscent of Mediterranean storage or preserving jars. It has a stand-up rim and four small lugs on the shoulders and is thrown in stoneware clay. The wood ash glaze (thickly applied on the upper parts, thinner below) is richly speckled, spotted, pitted and shiny but roughly textured, and effect which - far from being 'accidental' - is the result of the potter's extensive knowledge of materials and firing techniques. This pot, like all Svend Bayer's work from his pottery at Sheepwash, Devon, is wood fired.
