No 14: Open bowl, 1975 (P.76.1)

The third type of bowl by Lucie Rie in this discussion on 'liquid colour' is the most complex; it shows colour from within the clay body of the pot affecting the glaze. A bowl is thrown, using two balls of contrastingly-coloured clays, one or both of which has been stained with oxide. As the clay rotates on the wheel and a vessel is formed, a 'spiral' pattern is created to act as the decoration. On this bowl, a limestone glaze coats the porcelain and, in combination with the two colour-stained clays, appears duck-egg blue and grey. In addition, the rim is lightly banded with brown manganese pigment.
