No 9: Dish, 1961 (P84.7)

Not normally associated with slip-trailed wares, Katharine Playdell-Bouverie made this sizeable dish in 1961 at Kilmington Manor, her second pottery site. It was thrown on the wheel in a coarse, red stoneware clay and extravagantly brushed with slips in two colours: dark brown and light brown, then rhythmically embellished with an arching trail of cream slip. Finally, the entire upper surface was combed in one direction, producing an effect which, despite its roots in traditional British ceramics, is mannered in appearance. On the reverse are incised wavy lines.
