No 6: Jug, 1983 (P.83.1)

This thrown jug has a spirited appearance, due to its pronounced rim, pouring lip and throat and its pulled handle. The saltglazed stoneware body is incised deeply with three grooves at the base of the neck and animated within a free wavy line of sgraffito (drawn with a finger) reminiscent of slipware patterns. The pot was saltglazed and fired in a wood-burning kiln to 1300 degrees centigrade, producing a grey-black colour with the orange-peel texture of uneven blisters. This grey colour contrasts with the transparent glaze used on the broad lip. The jug was made at Casson's Wobage Farm Pottery in Herefordshire.
