No 5: Cider jar, 1960s (P.77.9)
A traditional West Country form, this cider jar was thrown in red local earthenware clay at Cardew's Wenford Bridge Pottery in Cornwall, to which he returned after working in Africa. The jar is banded in white slip around the belly and neck, then covered in a warm brown glaze. The same soft brown glaze, used more thickly, is applied to the body in calligraphic brushstrokes and in simple bands in intervals.
