No 23: Rectangular bottle, 1969 (P.75.103)
Thrown at the Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall, the body of this stoneware bottle was made rectangular by beating. The two main faces of the bottle are divided into four panels, in each of which a character loosely derived from Chinese writing is painted in a rich iron-red glaze, over a grey-white or a blue ground.
