| Description | A similar painting of the 6th Earl, but with the sitter reversed and wearing a white wig, is in the collection of Skipton Castle. This painting is possibly a later work, which draws from the Skipton painting. Thomas Tufton (1644-1729) was the grandson of Lady Anne Clifford. The ''Good Earl'' as he was known, enjoyed possession of his estates for 45 years, earning £1,500 a year. He was, however, a very charitable man, giving donations to schools, churches, hospitals and especially to aid the poor of the parish. He preserved the castle at Skipton and considerably rebuilt Appleby, but Brough, Brougham and Pendragon castles were used as quarries or otherwise dismantled. | |
