| Description | This scene is dominated by an enormous cart drawn by five horses of varying sizes and a donkey. They appear to be straining to pull the cart out of a muddy dip in the road. It is heaped with barrels and other items, and at the top, on a bed of hay, reclines the sleeping driver, his whip in one hand. Behind the carriage are two dogs, and in the distance two female figures can be seen heading in the same direction. The scene is set against an Italianate landscape at dawn; there are still hints of pink on the clouds. | |
