| Description |
This classical landscape is similar to Jacob Philipp Hackert's Villa of Maecenas (1793, Hermitage Museum). The low viewpoint emphasises the scale of the Tivoli falls, which occupy almost the whole surface of the canvas. The villa of Maecenas, sitting high above on the cliff, appears dwarfed by this spectacle of nature. The blue sky occupies only a slender strip in the upper part of the painting. The grandeur of the scenery is reinforced by the two diminutive fishermen under a tall tree, in the left foreground. They wear classical robes, evoking idyllic life in Arcadia. |
