| Title | Portrait of a Man | |
| Collection | Astley Cheetham Art Gallery, Stalybridge | |
| Artist | Attributed to Flemish School | |
| Date | 1551 (dated) | |
| Description | A very similar painting, possibly by the same hand, entitled Portrait d'un Protestant and attributed to the sixteenth-century Netherlandish School is known from a photograph in the Witt Library, Courtauld Institute, London. The inscription to either side of the sitter's head reads 'Die God vreest inde ontsiet, Hem en Mach ghebreken niet.' The inscription also includes as in the Astley Cheetham work, the sitter's age and date of the work, 'ETATIS SUAE 32, 1541'. The positioning of the sitter, features and facial hair are very similar to the Staylebridge painting, but instead of a book the younger man in the Witt painting holds a pair of gloves and the hilt of a sword is visible under his cloak. The two works are so close that they are very likely to be by the same hand and possibly even depict members of the same family. | |
