Notes An example of a major historiated initial from a large monastic choir book (either a Gradual or an Antiphonal). Original bookseller's remarks on the piece - "An exceedingly beautiful Initial E, representing, on the richest gold ground, the Martyrdom of St. Stephen, who, robed in dalmatic of scarlet, kneels in the rocky foreground to receive the shower of stones hurled by five executioners, behind whom stands Saul the persecutor. The Almighty [God], surrounded by an Angelic cohort, gives his blessing from a cloud. The group is really magnificent. Italien Saec. XV". The date stated here in incorrect. This would have originally been part of the Central School's Teaching Examples Collection.
Object Notes A large major initial 'E', probably from a choir book, in a gold rectilinear ground with stylised acanthus flourishing. This is a fine example of an historiated major initial, such is the narative of the scene held within the 'E'. The scene shows the Martyrdom of Saint Stephen (who was stoned to death)
