| Brief Physical Description | Sample of fine fabric manipulation in wild silk style fabric using smocking, machine tucks and tied spots. | |
| Object Description Information | A sample of experimental tucking, the main piece of cream coloured silk has been gathered up on the smocking machine and the gathers have been closed up in some places and opened up in others to reveal the stitching. A second piece of silk that has also been gathered on the smocking machine and a further texture has been achieved by sewing small circles in the cloth with running stitch and then pulling these up to form a bobble. This nodule has then been tied with cotton thread. This second piece of silk has been appliquéd to the first at an angle from the side. The edges have been frayed and the over all effect is of iridescent and active texture. | |

| Content And Subject Information | Students taking the Embroidery course at Goldsmiths College under Constance Howard during the 1960's were encouraged to experiment with textile techniques at all times. Students begun by learning the basic traditional method of work and then applied their imagination. Constance Howard and other members of staff at the time would ask to use student samples for the books that they were writing. It is possible that this sample is illustrated in one of Constance Howard's books. Towards the end of the period that Constance Howard was Head of Department at Goldsmiths College there was the beginning of a shift away from pure stitch and more interest in fabric manipulation. It is possible that this little sample was made during the period that Audrey Walker was Head of Department. |
