Made as a present for Charlotte Wellington's (Hubert Wellington's first wife's) last birthday on 29 January, 1942. The writing was produced with a crow quill, but the violet was painted with a brush. Irene said she would hesitate to suggest this mixture of techniques to students as it was difficult to carry off, because the quill and brush make such different strokes. At this time it was fashionable, and considered correct, to match calligraphy with pen and quill drawings |
