Notes 'Capital' is the architectural term given to the head or 'cornice' of a pillar or column (being a diminutive of Latin 'caput' meaning head). Lethaby was interested in architectural detail throughout his life; some earlier examples (c.1883) of drawings of capitals were shown at the Central School Lethaby exhibition in 1984 (see catalogue page 67). These drawings can be found at the Athenaeum in Barnstaple.
Object Notes Full - "Byzantine Capital of the Vith Century, restored from the photograph of a broken original in the museum at Gizeh. Above what is shown here would have been a thick bearing-block. Restored and drawn by Professor Lethaby F.R.I.B.A.". A drawing by Lethaby, reproduced in The Building News, issue dated January 26th 1912. The original drawing was probably made in black chalk or wax crayon.
